In English
He was born at Thirunavalur. At Thiruvennainallur, on his wedding day, as the marriage chants were sounding, an old man walked into the hall holding a palm-leaf deed: "This man is my slave. Here is the document his grandfather signed." The bridegroom rose in fury before the full assembly; the case went to arbitration; the deed held. The old man walked ahead, Sundarar following — into the temple, where he vanished, and revealed Himself as the Lord. And He said: "Begin your song with the very word you called me in your anger." So the first hymn was born: "Pitha piraisoodi" — O One mad with love, O wearer of the crescent. No other song in the world has begun like that — with an endearment the Lord Himself asked for.
From that day he was not only the Lord's bond-servant — he was Thambiran Thozhan, the Lord's own friend; the one God befriended. He was also called Vanthondan — the bold devotee — who could argue with his Lord, ask of Him, even sulk at Him, all inside the safety of that friendship. Thiruvarur became his home. How deep did the friendship go? Deep enough that at midnight, for His friend's sake, the Lord Himself walked as a messenger to Paravaiyar's house. The feet that measured the universe walked a devotee's domestic errand, more than once. Closeness enough to make God your servant; love enough that God delighted to serve.
At the Devasiriya hall in Thiruvarur, seeing the gathered devotees, he sang "I am the servant of the servants of the andanar of Thillai" — the Thiruthondathogai, the seed from which the story of the sixty-three saints grew, the first seed of the tree that later spread as the Periya Puranam. In mid-life his eyesight was taken; he pleaded with the Lord, quarrelled with Him, sang at Him — and shrine by shrine, little by little, his sight was given back. Friendship is not only sweetness; it is the bond that survives its own quarrels. At the last, in the fullness of his friendship with the Chera king Cheraman Perumal, he rose to Kailasa from Thiruvanchaikkalam on a white elephant the Lord sent for him.
A deeper note
Sundarar's way is the friend's way — the closeness that claims, argues, even sulks with the Lord. The boldness of a love without fear, that asks of God as a friend asks of a friend.
